These homemade tortillas will be a new favorite in the kitchen!

Have you ever planned to make tacos for a ‘taco Tuesday’ family meal, only to find NO tortillas in the cabinet?! With a few ingredients you can make your own in no time. The best part is they are without all of the processed ingredients that you’ll find in store-bought tortillas.

I originally found a homemade tortillas recipes on another blog, but as I was trying to replicate it, the dough just wasn’t the consistency that I usually work with. So, I tweaked it to my liking and that is what I’m sharing with you today. As you start to use this recipe you may find that my preferences in dough are different than yours, so feel free to add or remove the ingredients to your own liking.

HOMEMADE TORTILLAS RECIPE:

What you’ll need:

  • 3.5 cups of all purpose flour. My favorite flour to use is the King Arthur brand
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup oil. I used olive oil, but you can use whatever you have on-hand
  • 1.5 cups warm water

Directions:

  • Combine all dry ingredients. I used my kitchen aid mixer for this entire process, but it can be done without a mixer.
  • Add your oil while your mixer is on medium low speed, using the dough hook attachment
  • Slowly pour in warm water
  • Mix until your dough is not sticky
  • Let your dough rest 15 minutes. This can be in the mixer bowl or on a floured surface
  • Flour a work surface
  • Divide dough into round ‘dough balls’- here you can choose how many you’d like. My husband loves eating tacos on big tortillas- so I made about 8 large dough balls.
  • Preheat a skillet on medium low, buttered or oiled
  • While skillet is preheating on stove, roll dough balls into a thin (or thick) tortilla shape
  • Cook tortillas 1 minute and 45 seconds on first side, and 45 seconds on the second side
  • Wrap in a kitchen towel to keep warm until you’re ready to use them, or store in fridge.

I used these tortillas for taco night and they were a hit! Here are some other ideas you could use your homemade tortillas for:

  • cheese quesadillas – spread sour cream on one side, shredded cheese on the other, fold in half and cook in a skillet until tortilla is crispy and cheese is melted.
  • shrimp fajitas – add cooked shrimp, peppers, onions, tomato, cheese and sour cream. Fold and enjoy!
  • “french tortillas” kind of like french toast but using a tortilla. Whisk together egg, cream from raw milk or heavy cream, cinnamon, honey (or sugar). Slice tortillas into strips and dip into mixture, cook in skillet until browned on both sides, but still soft.
  • chicken fajitas – same recipe as the shrimp fajitas, just swap the shrimp for chicken.
